As a self proclaimed "sports nut" company President Rich Spaulding has been in a long lasting love affair with sports and tailgating. As such, he has made it his life's work to bring the best tailgating games and gear to the consumer through the Gold Star Games website.

Gold Star Games provides fun tailgating games and gear for sports fans. They do this by offering the coolest games and tailgating gear combining with an easy-to-use website.

MO: Can you talk about how you started the company? Did you solicit investors or raise the capital you needed in some other way?

Rich: Gold Star Games started in my apartment with my best friend Jotham McCauley. We had the idea of selling big arcade games, pinball machines, and other expensive coin operated "old school" arcade games to home owners via a website. Arcade machines like Pac-Man and Golden Tee Golf sell for $5,000+ and decent margins. We thought an easy to use web store selling these types of machines would be a winning combination. We wrote a 34 page business plan with no idea on where to get money. We started with our parents. They were impressed with the business plan (at least they told us that) and gave us some cash to get started. Within three months, we had an office, a website, customers, and a real business.

After 18 months of grinding out sales, we ran out of money. Gold Star Games was bringing in enough money for one person to make a decent living, but not enough revenue for two people. I gave Jotham a check for his half of Gold Star Games and we parted ways.

Once rightfully thought of as a bedroom community of Vancouver, Surrey, in British Columbia, has steadily climbed its way into the world of cityness. It's now the 12th largest city in Canada, and the second largest in B.C., but both of those rankings are likely to be short-lived. The city is expected to keep growing and is likely to overtake Vancouver as the province's most populous city within the next 10 or 15 years, becoming one of the top ten in Canada. Considering the pace it's growing now, it could happen even sooner.

Surrey's population grew by about 47,000 people between 2001 and 2006, and by more than 75,000 people between 2006 and 2011, according to the latest census figures. Now home to about 468,000 people, it's still got a ways to go before it meets Vancouver's current mark of 603,000. But at a regional scale, Surrey is growing at a much faster rate. Surrey's population increase accounted for about 37 percent of the growth in the metro Vancouver region between 2006 and 2011. Vancouver city, by comparison, only contributed about 12 percent.

With nearly three times the land mass of Vancouver, it's not especially surprising that Surrey would be able to see that much more growth, says Christina DeMarco, a regional planner at Metro Vancouver, the region's association of governments.

Yesterday I wrote a post about the need for CIOs to deliver business value, citing a Constellation Research report that listed the four personas CIOs will need to master if they hope to be successful. In Constellation's opinion, the personas are: chief infrastructure officer, chief integration officer, chief intelligence officer and chief innovation officer.

 

Of course, this kind of debate over CIO roles and responsibilities is nothing new. In 2009 I wrote about shifts in CIO responsibility, noting that attendees of a CIO event suggested their title could just as easily be chief simplicity officer, chief organizational officer or strategy execution officer.

 

In 2007 I called the CIO the most thankless job in the enterprise, sharing author and provocateur Nicholas Carr's opinion that the CIO is the least defined position in the C-suite and also "the most prone to identity crises."

Season Ending Patriots Media Thoughts — Boston Sports Media Watch

Much like the Patriots season, the performance of the media covering the team this season was marked by highs and lows.

For the most part, the day-to-day coverage from the beat reporters was solid. It's a veteran group, who understand how things work down in Foxborough, and have learned to make the best of what can be a challenging situation for the media.

Beat reporters generally stay away from the hysteria that often accompanies good or bad performance or controversial transactions. I'm lumping the "NFL Reporters" (Such as Greg Bedard) in with the "beat" reporters, because both are generally down at Gillette everyday. Here are a few thumbnails on some of the reporters who covered the team this season, in no particular order:

Tom E Curran
In addition to his work on the CSNNE.com website, Curran also hosts the weekly show Quick Slants. He brings a unique sense of humor to his job, while still maintaining solid reporting and analysis. Curran is usually good for one or two headscratchers a season, where he seems to deviate from the script a little bit. This year was no exception, as a couple of times during appearances on WEEI's Big Show, he took a harder line stance against the team on a matter. Overall though, Curran is thoroughly enjoyable to both read and watch/listen to.

Ian R Rapoport
It's a testament to Rapoport's prolific output of Tweets and blogging that if you type "Rapsheet" into Google, his stuff comes up first. Engage him, he'll respond, at almost any time of day. Like Curran, humor is a big part of his coverage, but he also is a very good reporter. He started doing weekly appearances on WEEI's Dennis and Callahan this season, and while it took half the year for John Dennis to say "Rapsheet" instead of "RapReport," Rapoport did a good job defusing many of D&C's conspiracy theories and attempts at controversy. He tends to go off-track on his Twitter account from time to time, but he's an entertaining follow, and does break his share of news, especially when it comes to injury reporting.

Mike Reiss
While he created much of the blueprint for how the Patriots beat is covered in the Belichick era, Mike is still at the top of his game, bringing endless bits of information to his blog and keeping a level head in chats with so-called "fans" of the Patriots. He's expressed frustration at the level of negativity around the team, and you also get the sense he doesn't always love the stuff that ESPN sort of force-feeds into his blog. He still does things no one else is doing, such as the offensive and defensive snap counts, which are used by almost every other media outlet in town – whether they give Reiss credit or not.

Yemi had never really been to able to afford hospital treatment. A young widow, she and her family wallowed in abject poverty for years. Already a mother, she was pregnant and jobless when her husband died years ago. Life became difficult.

Things went from bad to worse. At five months gestation, Yemi had not registered for ante natal, nor visited the nearby Primary Health Centre in her locality. The reason was basic – there was no money to pay the hospital bill and other essentials.

Free medical treatment

Fortunately, her Local Government was chosen for the pilot project.  Under the project, select primary health care centres offer free medical treatment to pregnant women and children under the age of five years once they enroll for the scheme. This was the saving grace for Yemi.

She had her baby in a safe and healthy environment. Today, she and her baby are hale and hearty thanks to the NHIS/MDGs' MCH project. Kelechi, a 20-year-old orphan who hails from Imo state was unable to finish school. Since her parents died, she became pregnant in the process of making ends meet.

Unfortunately, her supposed partner had no regular source of income and was unable to support her. No one could readily support her and her guardians actually sent her away. Seven months into her pregnancy, she fell ill in the middle of nowhere.

We are currently in some kind of cat version of Cold War paranoia and subterfuge. At this point I am not sure who is double crossing who, but something is going on.

You need to get the cat's urine sample to the vet while it is still fresh enough to test. This meant that I could not put everything in place last night, and come down this morning to a beautifully brimming litter tray.

No. It has been much more complex than that.

Of course it has.

It is, as you can imagine, nigh on impossible to get your cat to widdle into a test tube on demand. In fact, if you can do this with your cat I suggest you drop whatever career it is you are currently pursuing and rush to the circus forthwith. Cirque du Soleil would snap you up. Or MI5.

When the vet tells you that you need to take a urine sample, they give you a kit, like so:

It is basically a load of plastic beads:

A test tube, and a pipette.

The plastic beads go in the clean, dry litter tray and sit there.

When the cat widdles on them, it fails to absorb the wee, which means you, as the urine collector, are able to tip the cat box at an angle, gather a pool of delicious wee, and pipette it up.

It is like the cat version of the Wacky Warehouse ball pool, but with less biscuit crumbs. It smells roughly the same though, I would imagine.

At this point you will have your open test tube waiting, ready to squeeze your pipette into. (top tip. You need to label your test tube. Do this before squeezing cat wee all over it. Also, put sellotape over the label, or the cat wee will eat through the ink. Just saying).

She makes it clear that some of those who suffer most are young people. Jones, who is a college student, declared her passion for the young because it falls under her own age group.

Says Jones, "The Oregon Health Plan should be open to more people who are under 21 years old. Private insurance shouldn't be so expensive for young people."

According to national surveys, the primary reason people are uninsured is the high cost of health insurance coverage. Notwithstanding, nearly one-quarter (23 percent) of the uninsured reported changing their way of life significantly in order to pay medical bills. Economists have discovered that increasing health care costs correlate to drops in health insurance coverage.

Jones believes that some of the greatest challenges that people face across this nation is obtaining affordable health care. "I would open an Oregon Health Plan to a variety of people who don't have insurance. It is hard to get health insurance."

Terri Heer, a registered nurse at a local hospital, claims that in order to improve America's health care system a key ingredient is to "make sure that everyone (has) access."

This would include cutting out on expenses that are not palpable to so called "health care needs". Heer says, "First, we spend a lot of money servicing people for illnesses that can be prevented. Some of the money spent can go to other things."

FYP: Tell us a little about yourself

D. Yee: I lived in the metro areas of New York for most of my life. Apart from photography, I continue to paint and draw as my other alternative to visual work involving human figures and stories. World travel is one of my favorite activities whenever I get/make the opportunity to.

FYP: Have you had formal training in photography?

D. Yee: No proper training as in classes or school. I'm mostly self taught and had worked with a photographer for a summer some years ago. Studying photographs and photo essays are also ways of learning and discovery.
